Goldendoodles

Goldendoodles come in many sizes and crosses. The cross can be 1st Generation (Golden Retriever x Poodle) or 2nd Generation (Goldendoodle x Poodle) or Multi Gen (Goldendoodle x Goldendoodle).

Their size as an adult is dependant upon the size of the mom and dad. Standard Goldendoodles (where the Poodle is a Standard Poodle) are considered a large breed dog and usually range from 50 lbs and up.  Moyen Goldendoodles (where the Poodle is a Moyen Poodle) are considered a medium breed dog and usually range from 35 - 55 lbs. There are even Mini Goldendoodles where the mom is small and the dad is a Miniature Poodle - and of course every size inbetween.

Purebred Poodles and Golden Retrievers can have genetic health issues that are commonly known in pure breed dogs. However, Goldendoodles tend to be a much hardier crossbreed possessing the best of both the Golden Retriever and the Poodle and avoiding genetic weaknesses.

A Goldendoodle's coat is generally quite long, shaggy with lots of waves or curls and range from low to no shedding depending on each pup's coat type. Golden Retrievers have a dense undercoat which can mat if not regularly maintained - especially their tails and around their ears. Because of this undercoat, Goldendoodles are great swimmers and do very well in colder temperatures. Some folks take their doodle to a groomer for bathing and grooming. Home care of a Goldendoodle means regular brushing - especially if they've been out romping through forest trails. A Goldendoodle's coat is super silky and soft - perfect for snuggling!

Our Goldendoodles here at Wild Rose Kennels are 2nd Generation Moyen Goldendoodles. The mom is our gorgeous 1st Generation Goldendoodle Lucy and the dad is our Moyen Poodle, Romeo. I personally love the 2nd Generations because their pups come in a variety of coat types - from quite straight with lots of waves like a Golden Retriever to super curly like a Poodle. As well, their size is perfect for folks who want a hardy medium-sized dog who can keep up with the most active family but also doesn't take up the whole back seat of the car - transportation is a snap for the medium- sized doodle.

Goldendoodles are truly the perfect family dog! Their strongest trait is their friendliness which makes them great for families with small children or who want to do any sort of therapy work with their doodle. They are intelligent, confident dogs who bond very quickly with their new family.
