Recipes & Fun Stuff

I use these treats for training so I cut them into quite small squares.

1/2 olive oil

2 eggs

1/2 cup natural peanut butter

1/4 cup cornmeal

1/4 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup canned pumpkin

1 1/2 - 2 cups wholewheat flour

1/2 cup flax meal (opt)

1/4 cup flax seeds (opt)

Preheat oven to 350.

Cream oil, eggs, peanut butter.  Add dry ingredients and stir well.  Add additional flour or add water to help make dough workable.  Dough should be quite stiff (like cookie batter).  Flour your board, then roll the dough flat about 1/4 - 1/2 inch thick.  If you want small treats, cut your rolled dough into 1/2 " long strips, then cut those into 1/2 inch litttle squares.  Squeeze each square in the middle to form the shape of a little bowtie/bone.  If you want larger treats, cut the squares larger.  If you have a dog bone cookie cutter - that is so cute!

Put on a cookie sheet covered with parchment.  Bake for about 30-40 min. until treats are quite hard - sort of like biscotti.  Cool on paper towels.  Treats can be freezed in small baggies.  They are actually quite tastey even without any sugar!  You might want to label the container so your kids don't think they're kid cookies! smile

We always train our dogs to "ring the bell" when they want to go outside.  The bells can be purchased through pet stores, or you can make one.

24-36" of cord/shoe lace/ribbon (depending on how high your door knob is and how short your puppy is)

2 - 6 small bells (2 bells for each ring)

1 - 3 metal rings

needle & thread

ribbon & other embellishments

Tie or sew 2 bells to each metal ring.  I use rings so that the bells jingle really easily.  Attach/tie one ring to the end of your cord.  You can also attach a couple rings further up the cord.  Tie the other end into a slip knot or loop that will fit over your door knob.  Hang the bells and adjust their height so your puppy can easily reach them.  You can add embelishments like ribbons for decoration.
